John Welch - BYU Law professor John W. Welch is the Robert K. Thomas Professor of Law and editor-in-chief of BYU Studies. He practiced law in Los Angeles with O'Melveny & Myers, at which time he founded the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies. He has served as an editor for Macmillan's Encyclopedia of Mormonism and as the General Editor of the Collected Works of Hugh Nibley. He organized the bicentennial conference for Joseph Smith at the Library of Congress and has served on the executive committee of the Biblical Law Section of the Society of Biblical Literature.

Marianne Jennings Marianne M. Jennings is an emeritus professor of legal and ethical studies in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. She has served as a consultant to several corporatons, including Boeing, Dial, Mattel, Motorola, Coca-Cola, DuPont and IBM. She is a noted columnist and her work has appreared in the Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribuen, New York Times, Washington Post and Reader's Digest. She is a contributing editor for the Real Estate Law Journal, the Corporate Finance Review and Financial Engineering. She serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Legal Studies Education.

Presented by Professor John Sims
This talk will discuss the ethics of the situation in which a client wants an attorney to draft a legal opinion stating that a particular future course of action is legally sound and that attorney’s professional responsibility obligations.
Professor John Sims of Pacific McGeorge School of Law specializes in legal issues involving the Constitution, national security, human rights, and professional responsibility. After graduating from Georgetown University and serving as an editor of the Harvard Law Review, he clerked for Chief Judge Frank Coffin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Then, in 1986, after 10 years with the public interest law firm founded by Ralph Nader, Prof. Sims joined the McGeorge law faculty. Professor Sims is a founding Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of National Security Law and Policy, a peer-reviewed law review devoted to the broad range of issues related to national defense.

James D. Gordon is Assistant to the President for Planning and Assessment at Brigham Young University. He is also the Marion and Rulon A. Earl Professor of Law at the J. Reuben Clark Law School. He received a B.A. in Political Science at BYU and a J.D. at the University of California at Berkley. He clerked for Judge Monroe G. McKay of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, and then practiced law in Salt Lake City. Professor Gordon has also served as Associate Academic Vice President for Faculty at BYU, as an Associate Dean and Interim Dean of the law school.

Mr. Echo Hawk is a former Idaho Attorney General and state legislator and was confirmed Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs on May 20, 2009 by President Obama. A member of the Pawnee Nation, Mr. Echo Hawk was elected Attorney General of Idaho in 1990, the first American Indian in U.S. history elected as a state attorney general. A former U.S. Marine, Echo Hawk also served as professor of law at Brigham Young University's J. Reuben Clark Law School, teaching federal Indian Law, criminal law, animal law, criminal procedure, evidence and criminal trial practice. He has published several scholarly papers.

Dean James Rasband joined the Law School faculty in 1995. Prior to entering academia, he served as a law clerk to Judge J. Clifford Wallace of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and practiced law at Perkins Coie in Seattle, Washington, where his practice focused on Indian treaty litigation. Immediately prior to his appointment as dean, he was serving in university administration as the Associate Academic Vice President for Faculty.
Dean Rasband’s research and teaching has centered on public land and natural resources law and policy. He has published many articles and book chapters on these subjects and is coauthor, along with James Salzman at Duke University and Mark Squillace at the University of Colorado, of Natural Resources Law and Policy, an important casebook in the field. He has taught courses in water law, wildlife law, public lands and natural resources law, torts, and international environmental law. He has also taught as a visiting professor at Murdoch University School of Law in Perth, Australia, and as a visiting fellow at T.C. Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.

Think of lawyering as a verb - interview, investigate, counsel, draft, advocate, analyze, negotiate, manage. This presentation will explore techniques, tips, and strategies to help you use technology to "lawyer."

The Rise of Religious Freedom: HIstorical Perspectives
It's not too late to register for our JRCLS luncheon tomorrow featuring Professor Gary B. Doxey, associate director of the International Center for Law and Religion Studies at BYU.
Professor Doxey has enjoyed careers in both professional practice and academia. His public service includes serving as chief of staff to Governor Olene S. Walker, general counsel to Governor Michael O. Leavitt, Utah’s deputy commissioner of financial institutions, and associate general counsel to the Utah Legislature. In academia, before his current appointment at the International Center, he was a professor in BYU’s History Department. Professor Doxey has a J.D. from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU and a Ph.D. in history from Cambridge University. In the LDS Church, he has served as a Mission President and currently serves as an Area Seventy.
Lunch will be provided. The cost is $30.00 and we have requested approval for one hour of CLE from the Utah State Bar.

Reuben Clark Law Society to a presentation by Brent Sorenson, a local attorney in private practice who specializes in representing individuals and entities in bankruptcy proceedings. We are pleased to hear from Mr. Sorenson, who will provide us with helpful insights on the world of bankruptcy and insolvency law, designed to educate and assist lawyers who do not specialize in bankruptcy, but who find themselves up against bankruptcy and insolvency concerns in their everyday practice.

For the first of our events designed to introduce attorney mentors from the Spokane Chapter of the JRCLS to student members from the GU student chapter, the Friday evening football game between BYU and TCU will be showing on multiple projector and flat screen TV’s while those who attend enjoy light snacks and beverages and a social hour. The game will be shown in two large adjacent conference rooms, with plenty of seating for all who attend. Catered barbecue from Longhorn will be provided at 6:00pm for those who would like to stay and enjoy dinner and the rest of the game. Spouses and significant others are welcome to attend. The cost per person for those staying for dinner will be $15. You are also welcome to bring your own meal if you would prefer. Santa Run To Benefit Legal Aid

The Santa Run to Benefit Legal Aid is a Run/Walk/push your stroller of 1and ¼ miles down Nicollet Mall on December 1 2007, at 4pm Your $10 registration fee gets you a red Santa suit, hat & white beard; children 12 and under get a Santa hat. The Santa Run is great fun for all – hundreds of red-coated Santas taking off down the mall – all to raise money for free civil legal services for poor & disadvantaged Minnesotans. There’s music & hot chocolate & enough Santas to make even Scrooge giggle!
Cost: Registration fee is $10, and each participant is asked to raise at least $100 in sponsorships. Although this seems like a lot, especially for a law student, I have found that it is quite easy if you send a message to a large contingent of your friends and family members (the more the better, but at least 10) and ask if they would be willing to pay $10 (or more if you are feeling saucy) to see you run through downtown Minneapolis in a Santa suit and beard while coincidentally contributing to legal aid for under-privileged individuals.

We previously announced the Fall Picnic and Barbecue on October 8, 2010. Shortly thereafter, the auto-RSVP system failed and is not yet repaired. We are pleased to announce that our speaker for the dinner will be F. Ross Boundy, a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP in Seattle. Ross will be speaking to us regarding "Joseph Smith & the Law." In 2005, Ross took a leave of absence from his law firm to spend the fall semester assisting Professor Jack Welch in teaching the inaugural "Joseph Smith & the Law” class at the BYU Law School. In this class, students explored the development of American jurisprudence by studying the multiple legal proceedings involving the prophet. Each student wrote a research paper as background research for the legal documents section of the widely-heralded "Joseph Smith Papers Project." The Church has just released the second volume in the series, which is ultimately expected to comprise a 30 volume definitive set containing literally every document with which Joseph was personally involved.
