J. Reuben Clark Law Society
Philippines Manila Chapter
Though barely three years old, the Philippines Chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society has already accomplished a great deal. The Philippines Chapter was organized on May 21, 2008, and the 17 founding lawyers serving as executive and committee officers quickly prepared for the Grand Launching and Induction of Officers on August 21, 2008. More than 100 were in attendance at the Grand Launching, including 33 lawyers, several stake presidents, and other supporting guests. A short year later the Philippines Chapter hosted another special event on August 21, 2009: The First Year Anniversary Conference. The Conference, titled Dispensing Legal Services With the Energies of Our Soul, was well attended by 54 Philippine lawyers and featured three distinguished speakers. - President Keith R. Edwards, current Philippine Area President for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, opened the conference by exhorting attendees to be “spiritual advocates”, reassuring that “advocates bring harmony to the world”. - Guest speaker Quezon City Regional Trial Court Judge Elisa Sempio Diy shared insights about being a Judge in the Family Court. - Attorney David Berrett of the Office of General Counsel–Asia introduced the origin and definition of the word “advocate”. He continued by discussing justice, mercy, and the Atonement, and how a lawyer’s advocacy of their client or a Priesthood leader’s advocacy for a members mirrors, to a certain extent, that of the Savior’s advocacy with the Father. The Philippines Chapter currently is supported by 62 members. Chapter members are recognized annually through Volunteer Service Awards and International Conferences Attendance Awards.
