JRCLS Greater New York Chapter Members,


We would like to invite you to attend our annual JRCLS Summer Luncheon on Friday, July 28th from 12:30pm to 1:30pm.  All members of the JRCLS Greater New York Chapter are welcome to attend, as well as any current law school students studying at law schools in the greater New York area and any prospective students who plan to attend law school in the near future.  We would also like to extend a special invitation to any law school students who are presently working in New York as summer associates or in summer clerkship positions.  We encourage you to invite your friends and colleagues as well.

At the luncheon we will provide an update on a number of local and national initiatives that the JRCLS is presently working on, and give an overview of our local chapter's mission and proposed activities for the rest of the year.  We welcome any ideas or suggestions from our chapter members regarding upcoming events and initiatives that they would like to see implemented.  There will also be time set aside for networking and socializing after the conclusion of our lunch program.

We would like to invite you to attend our upcoming Spring Luncheon on Thursday, May 4th.  We will have the privilege of hearing from Elder Von G. Keetch, a General Authority Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.   Elder Keetch currently serves as the Executive Director of the Public Affairs Department, and prior to his call as a General Authority served as chief outside counsel to the LDS Church while practicing law at Kirton McConkie from 1990 to 2015.  Elder Keetch will be speaking on the topic of religious freedom and discuss some of the recent work he has been involved in with the Public Affairs Department.

All members of the Greater New York Chapter are welcome to attend, as well as any current law school students studying at law schools in the Greater New York area.  We encourage you to invite your friends and colleagues to attend as well.

Dean Smith will also be available to answer questions from chapter members regarding his vision for BYU Law School, the influence that JRCLS attorneys can have within the legal profession, and how to increase the connectivity between BYU Law School, its students and alumni, and the JRCLS Chapter in New York.

We've included the general message below, but wanted to follow-up to let you know that the Greater New York City chapter will be sponsoring an event so that we can watch the broadcast together that evening. The Greater NYC Chapter's event will take place at the Union Square building in Manhattan, 144 West 15th Street. We will have a dinner at 7:00 p.m. and then watch the broadcast at 8:00 p.m.

Our speaker is Dr. Katrina Lantos Swett, Chair of the U. S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and she will be introduced by her friend, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland.

The fireside is in the LDS Conference Center Little Theater, with a reception following.

If you are in the area, please join us and bring your friends – no tickets needed.

The Fireside is broadcast in English, Spanish, and Portuguese at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. MST and is accessible (not encrypted) at chapels with a satellite dish.

Aug 19, 2014BYU Education Week CLE Program
The BYU Education Week Continuing Legal Education Program will be held in Provo, Utah, on August 19 – 22, 2014.  This year's program will include presentations on religious liberty issues, trial practice and litigation ethics, adoption, family, and immigration law, legal issues addressed by Oliver Cowdery, and more.  For less than $100.00, attorneys can earn up to 20 CLE credits over the four day program while enjoying the inspirational and information classes offered through both the CLE program and the other Education Week courses.

In order to attend the CLE courses, you must register as a Campus Education Week participant. In addition to the Campus Education Week tuition, attorneys seeking Continuing Legal Education credit are required to pay a $35 fee for the week to be paid at the door of 214 Crabtree Building (this covers the state CLE costs). CLE credit verification has already taken place for Utah, but participants seeking credit for all other states must check with their respective state bars for verification that the CLE courses will be accepted for credit.

The JRCLS Annual Fireside is taking place on January 31, 2014.  The keynote speaker will be Elder Bruce C. Hafen, Emeritus General Authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and one of the founders of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society.  The JRCLS Greater NYC Chapter is sponsoring the following events that evening.  
 
1.  The NYC Chapter's main event will take place at the Union Square building in Manhattan, 144 West 15th Steet.  We will have a dinner at 7:00 p.m. and then watch the broadcast at 8:00 p.m.  The cost for dinner will be $15 per person for attorneys and $10 per person for students.  All attorneys and students are encouraged to bring a plus one.
 
2.  A smaller group will be gathering to watch fireside at the New Canaan Chapel, which is located at 628 South Ave. in New Canaan, CT.  There will be a potluck dessert social beginning at 7:00 p.m. in New Canaan, which will be followed by the broadcast at 8:00 p.m.
