CLE Luncheon Series with Terryl Givens
Thursday November 12, 2009 Luncheon With Lisa Grow Sun
The local JRCLS members met in the Irish Cultural Center in Downtown Phoenix to listen to Lisa Grow Sun. Despite Mrs. Sun’s incredible academic accomplishments and accolades (see flyer under "calendar & events", "CLE Luncheon Series"), she was down to earth, approachable and unassuming. Mrs. Sun gave an interesting speech on her area of study, the subject of "disaster law".
Early in the luncheon, Mr. Wayne Arnett was presented with the Jesse Udall Award in recognition of his many years of service in the community.
Also before hearing from Lisa Grow Sun, the Society recognized the two student recipients for the 2009-2010 J. Reuben Clark Law Society scholarship. Both Students at ASU’s Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, William Skabelund (1L) and Natalie Greaves (3L) will enjoy $1500 scholarships sponsored by this Phoenix chapter and its members.
Lisa Grow Sun attended a reception for the "Women in the Law" section of the Phoenix chapter, and then spoke to the large crowd of local members in the main reception hall of the Irish Cultural Center.
Among many other accomplishments, Mrs. Sun was the first woman to graduate first in her class in the history of Harvard Law. She was the first student to graduate summa cum laude in 15 years, an honor earned by only a handful of students in the history of Harvard Law.
