JRCLS Annual Leadership Conference

Brigham Young University law professor Gary B. Doxey addressed the J. Reuben Clark Law Society as the keynote speaker for the annual JRCLS Leadership Conference at Aspen Grove on September 29. Doxey, associate director of the International Center for Law and Religion Studies, gave a brief perspective about the decay of religious freedom throughout the world and emphasized the "subtle erosion" of religious liberty in the United States. He issued a call to action to be active in defending religious freedom for all people.

"Dynamic Duos" Enlighten Audience at Women-in-Law Event

Undergraduates, law students, and attorneys alike benefitted from the advice offered by three father-daughter attorney teams at a Women-in-Law-sponsored event on September 28. The "Dynamic Duo" event took place in Brigham Young University's Wilkinson Student Center the night before the J. Reuben Clark Law Society leadership conference, which made the event attractive to many JRCLS members and Board members.

The father-daughter pairs discussed topics ranging from how to handle demanding law school schedules to what professors expect from their students. Amid the advice, several participants stressed the importance and value of women studying and practicing law. The presentations ended with a lively question and answer session. Read more. . .


Justice Yacoob Gives Keynote Address at ICLRS Symposium

South Africa's Justice Zakeria Mohammed Yacoob was the keynote speaker in the opening session of the 18th Annual International Center for Law and Religion Studies Symposium, which took place October 2 - 4. During the conference, which was themed "Religious Freedom in a Pluralistic Age: Trends, Challenges and Practices," Yacoob called listeners to action, stating that all people have the potential to add value in this critical fight for religious freedom. On a beautiful October morning nearly 100 participants gathered in St. George, Utah, to enjoy presentations from leading authorities on law and literature. The Second Annual International Religious Liberty Award Dinner took place on October 6 at the historic Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., honoring Kevin "Seamus" Hasson's lifetime of service to the cause of religious freedom. founder of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. Read more. . .


Robert C. O'Brien named one of the Daily Journal's Top 100 Lawyers in California

Robert C. O'Brien, previous chair of the Los Angeles Chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society, has been named one of the Daily Journal's Top 100 Lawyers in California for 2011. The Daily Journal, California's leading provider of legal industry news, selected its Top 100 from more than 1,000 nominations. The California State Bar currently has a membership of 232,943. Texas Regional Activity: An Evening with Judge Mayfield

The Texas Regional Activity took place in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 24, 2011. The Honorable Judge Alan Mayfield and his wife, Robin, were the guest speakers for the event. Judge Mayfield is currently a Senior District Judge in the Waco, Texas area. He has been an attorney since 1981 and has served as justice of the peace, district judge, seminary teacher, and bishop for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his career. Read more. . .
