JRCLS Women in the Law Panel

On Wednesday, October 3, 2012, the evening before the JRCLS Leadership Conference begins, the Women in the Law Committee will host "Dynamic Duos: Mothers & Daughters in the Law" on the Brigham Young University Campus.  The panel will feature a number of mother and daughter lawyers and law students addressing topics such as what it is like to be a law student, which law school is best for you, how to balance family and work, and using your legal skills in other areas.  The program will be held in the BYU Wilkinson Center, Room 3280 and will run from 7:00-8:30pm.  All are invited to attend, including any undergraduate students interested in attending law school.  Attorneys attending the Leadership Conference are encouraged to attend and mingle with students after the program.

JRCLS Leadership Conference Set for Next Week

The JRCLS Fall Leadership Conference is scheduled for October 4-5, 2012.  The conference will be held at Aspen Grove near Provo, Utah.  This year's program will feature keynote addresses by Elder Carl B. Pratt, Seventy Emeritus and former LDS Area Legal Counsel, and Bill Hulterstrom, President and CEO of United Way-Utah County.  If you are a JRCLS Leader and have not registered to attend, contact conference chair Scott Paul at scott.paul@uvu.edu.  To view the conference agenda, please visit http://www.jrcls.org/leadership_conference/.

Third Annual International Religious Liberty Award Dinner

The Third Annual JRCLS International Religious Liberty Award Dinner will be held on October 11, 2012 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.  This year's award will be presented to Professor Douglas Laycock of the University of Virginia Law School.  Dr. Katrina Lantos Swett, the newly-appointed chair of the US Commission on International Religious Liberty will also be speaking.  As a member of the LDS Church and a daughter if a Holocaust survivor, Dr. Swett brings a fascinationg perspective to the issue of international religious liberty.  Professor Laycock recently obtained a rare unanimous victory at the Supreme Court, confirming the right of all faiths to select their leaders without government interference.  Tickets for this event are available at www.jrclsdc.org/dinner.

Inspirational Thought

The Saints can testify whether I am willing to lay down my life for my brethren. If it has been demonstrated that I have been willing to die for a "Mormon." I am bold to declare before Heaven that I am just as ready to die in defending the rights of a Presbyterian, a Baptist, or a good man of any other denomination; for the same principle which would trample upon the rights of the Latter-day Saints would trample upon the rights of the Roman Catholics, or of any other denomination who may be unpopular and too weak to defend themselves.  It is a love of liberty which inspires my soul--civil and religious liberty to the whole of the human race.

—Joseph Smith, Jr., as quoted by W. Cole Durham
"The Doctrine of Religious Freedom," BYU Devotional, April 3, 2001.
