JRCLS Member Elected to Oregon House of Representatives

Congratulations to Shawn Lindsay, a Portland attorney and JRCLS member, who was recently elected to the Oregon House of Representatives. Mr. Lindsay works for the law firm Lane Powell (www.LanePowell.com) as an IP lawyer and acts as general counsel for a software consortium. His election campaign began with an uphill battle and seven percent voter deficit, but his strategy and efforts to knock on over 10,000 doors allowed him to successfully win the election by more than seven percent.

Mr. Lindsay was recognized in 2010 as a "Rising Star" in Intellectual Property by Oregon Super Lawyers. In addition to Shawn's work at a firm, and civic service in the Oregon State House of Representatives, he also finds time to serve on a pro bono basis as general counsel to Special Olympics Oregon.

Mr. Lindsay's campaign stretched over 18 months, and cost over $450,000. The support that he received from his own firm also helped tremendously. He says that, "but for Lane Powell's support I could not serve. They were exemplary in supporting me." Mr. Lindsay hopes that other law firms will follow and support lawyers within their ranks, encouraging them to seek election.

Mr. Lindsay is now serving as the representative of House District 30 in Hillsboro, Oregon which is commonly referred to as "Silicon Forest" because of the large concentration of software companies in the area. He is the only freshman co-chair in the House, and enjoys serving in this capacity on the Transportation and Economic Development Committee and the Higher Education Committee. The J. Reuben Clark Law Society is excited for the success and advancement of its members in both the private and public sector. Please share your success stories and that of your fellow members with the Newsletter.
