Inaugural Canadian Conference in Banff, Alberta


The inaugural Canadian Conference of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society was held October 28-29, 2011 at the historic Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, Alberta.  Approximately 100 lawyers, judges, spouses and other guests attended the two-day event.  The Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge Chapters hosted the Conference.
 
In his keynote address at the conference, Elder Lance B. Wickman, General Counsel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and an Emeritus General Authority noted, “The Adversary has returned to the Courthouse.”  Elder Wickman then described some of the legal challenges that the Church faces, including challenges to religious liberty.  He urged lawyers to use their technical skills for spiritual purposes.
 
Other speakers at the Conference included Dr. Stephen ZoBell (Group Manager, Pacific Area – LDS Family Services), The Honourable Justice William A. Tilleman (Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta), The Honourable Judge Timothy G. Hironaka (Provincial Court of Alberta), The Honourable Judge Gregory S. Maxwell (Provincial Court of Alberta) and The Honourable Judge Eric D. Brooks (Provincial Court of Alberta).
