Women in Law Committee Hosts 7th Annual Prelaw Event

On Wednesday, September 30, 2015 the JRCLS Women in Law Committee hosted the 7th Annual Prelaw Event at BYU Law School. This year’s theme was “Women’s Perspectives in the Law: Is Law School Right for Me?” and the keynote speaker was Justice Christine M. Durham of the Utah Supreme Court.  Justice Durham has served on the Utah Supreme Court since 1982 and was Chief Justice from 2002 to 2012. In her remarks she talked about many of the right and wrong reasons for women to go to law school. In some ways there has never been a better time to go to law school given that applications and enrollment are down at many schools. Still, Justice Durham cautioned prelaw students from attending law school simply because they aren’t sure what else they would like to do. She also counseled that there are many ways to change the world, and the law is only one of them.
Justice Durham’s remarks were followed by a panel discussion with Justice Durham, Susannah Thomas, an attorney with the U.S. Department of the Interior, Elaine Young, a shareholder at Kirton McConkie in Salt Lake City, and Catherine Bramble, the former prelaw advisor at Brigham Young University who currently practices family law part-time. The panel was moderated by Megan Needham, a
member of the WIL Committee and an instructor at Indiana University. The panelists shared their diverse experiences with the law and answered several questions from the audience.  One key take away from the panel discussion was that balance is
possible when you choose to pursue something you love. Another strong message was to find ways to structure your career so that you can prepare for the future even if you don’t know what the future will bring.
After the panel discussion, prelaw and law students were able to mingle with attorneys at a reception in the Burns Memorial Lounge of the BYU Law School. Approximately 85 people attended the event. Each year the prelaw event is held the Wednesday evening before the JRCLS Leadership Conference commences. All Leadership Conference attendees are welcome to come.  Watch for details for the 2016 event!
