Women in the Law Resources - Discussion Topics
Topic 1 - Returning to the profession after taking time off for family
Read Lisa Belkin's New York Times Life's Work column "After Baby, Boss Comes Calling", May 17, 2007. After reading the article, consider using the following questions as the basis for personal reflection or for initiating a discussion in your local Women in the Law Committee.
How feasible is it to "opt-in" to the legal profession after taking time off for family?
Does it matter what area of the law you specialize in?
Is it easier to "opt-in" to private practice, government jobs, or in-house jobs or does it not make any difference?
What can you do to improve your chances to successfully "opt-in" to the profession after an absence from the profession?
What sacrifices might have to be made to "opt-in" successfully after an absence from the profession?
What can women in the profession do to further the opportunitites for other women to "opt-in" after an "opt-out"?
